What is Envelope Converting?

Many business owners are seeking new ways to make their direct mail campaigns stand out from the competition

A great way to do this is by introducing specialized envelopes into your print marketing efforts. Instead of using standard white envelopes, sending unique envelopes that support your specific message and branding can make just the positive impression you’re hoping for.

Print, emboss or foil your logo onto the envelope, die-cut a unique envelope shape, or incorporate multiple colors to fill the envelope. All of these ideas are great, but what about the process of folding and sealing the sides of the envelope? This process is called envelope conversion - what exactly is it though?

envelope converting

This process occurs when sheets of paper are die-cut into the specific shape and size given by the client, edges are glued, and then finally folded into what is now an envelope. Sounds simple, right?

If the client requests branding and messaging printed onto the envelope, it’s helpful to complete the printing before die-cutting, but still possible to do post-converting. If the client requests a security envelope with print on the inside of the envelope, this obviously must be done prior to conversion and die-cutting.

Throughout this process, be mindful of postal considerations! Receiving designs from clients with graphics in the areas of the recipients’ address and postage stamp will need to be altered in order to be in accordance with the guidelines of the postal service.

Go to a company that converts and prints envelopes

A business which converts envelopes will almost always print on envelopes as well. Streamlining this process and keeping the operation under one roof is a great way to ensure product quality and allow for easy communication during the project timeline.

PRO TIP: If you’re looking to add onto this service, find a company with the ability to take your envelope or mailing project from “A” to “Z”. In other words, look for a company who can…

  • Print/emboss/foil and fold your card or insert

  • Print, die-cut, and convert your envelope

  • Insert the mail piece into the sealed envelope

  • Sort, package and mail your project

Finding this company is like finding a gold mine.
